PEARLHAUS

Vancouver, BC

PearlHaus was designed for a young professional couple who love to cook, entertain, and travel. The clients wanted a modern, exciting home which maximized connection to its outdoor spaces, with an interior evocative of their favourite Parisian hotels. The overall design concept is one of non-enclosure: the suggestion of spaces via a composition of components in relation to one another rather than by enclosing boxes. Gaps between these elements provide the body, and imagination, with room to move.

The home’s design responds to its 33’ X 122’ corner lot, and is organized to accommodate a 17′ long kitchen island within a relatively compact house. Solid components like the long Library / Kitchen wall against the interior lot line; the enclosed Powder Room and Entry Closet; and the Fireplace at the street-facing elevation; combine to define rooms within the otherwise open space. These are minimally separated from the exterior by full height glazing. In the gardens, carefully considered hardscape and planting define outdoor spaces.

The exterior pairs off-white SwisPearl panels and stained Thermal Ash. The wood cladding becomes an ombre-effect screen thoughtfully spaced for light, a selective view, and privacy. This feature is echoed at the interior dark wood slats at the Entry Vestibule. The end result is a sense of place unique to its Owners, sophisticated and truly connected to its surroundings.
